Google going from strength to strength

The Hitwise figures for June 08 Search Engine market share in the US have been announced and Google is nearly at 70% (69.17% to be exact) usage. This is a rise from 61.8% in May; it’s amazing to see a Search Engine growing from strength to strength. In the UK Google.com and Google.co.uk usage is at 87.28%, this is mainly due to the UK being a few years behind the US with its online uptake. When most UK internet users started to use the internet, Google already had a large market share. With the addition of new services such as Google Docs and the strong spam filtering Googlemail offers, Yahoo really couldn’t compete. It doesn’t help that Yahoo has a very busy home page that now looks so much more confusing than it did ten years ago. Where Google has kept its simple homepage format since it was launched as a Beta service back in 1998.

Is Google becoming stronger than all other Search Engines a good thing? Well it certainly raises the bar for the other Search Engines to try and reach, and I can’t fault the search results that Google returns in comparison to Yahoo and Msn. But a monopoly is always concerning; squashing the competition is exactly what is happening. Will it be the downfall of the other Search Engines and will others ever manage to compete in the near or distant future.

Everyone naturally advertises on Google with their Pay Per Click campaigns, because of this Yahoo and MSN can provide a more cost effective advertising environment. This is because there are less people bidding so the terms are not as competitive as they would be in Google. This is great for Pay Per Click advertisers, although Yahoo and MSN still lose out. They earn less money from what is their primary source of income and they have no way to compete with the earnings Google makes with its Adsense platform.

It’s certainly something to watch and there are still many new Search Engines trying to break through. This article looks at 75 Search Engines that could be future Google beaters! But for now, Google is strong, it provides great results and is certainly not going anywhere.
