In the world of business, marketing plays a vital role both in raising your company’s public profile and in making more customers aware of your services. A lot of businesses, however, fail to see the importance of marketing when they take their business online. Even more than on the high-street, online marketing is absolutely essential for success.
Search Engine Marketing
One of the best kinds of advertising you can get involved in online is Search Engine Marketing (SEM). With this kind of advertising you utilise the search engines themselves to promote your site. This could be in the form of paid placement, where you pay for an advert to be displayed at the top of search results for a specific keyword, or it could be in the form of pay-per-click (PPC) advertising where your adverts get spread across the search engine’s distribution network and you pay for each click on them.
Another more common form of SEM is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Basically this involves tailoring your content to better fit certain keywords. The main copy of your site, the meta-tag keyword lists and more can be customised to provide better search results. Another aspect of SEO is getting placed on other websites, as the more back-links you have pointing to your site, the higher your rank in search results. This will involve submitting your website to online directories, for example.
It is important to note that there are certain areas of search engine optimisation to be careful of. The search engines have become much tougher to please over the last few years due to people abusing keywords and link placement to achieve higher search results, it is now even possible to get your website banned from a search engine if you’re not careful, so if you choose to use some form of SEO it pays to hire an expert who really knows what he’s doing.
Cost & Benefits
The costs involved with search engine marketing can vary quite dramatically depending on which search engine you choose and what keywords you are bidding on. When compared to print media, however, the overall cost can be much lower. As more and more people turn to shopping online for extra discounts and to save on fuel prices and other costs, online marketing has become much more effective and can increase the traffic to your website and hence your revenue from sales.
Pay-per-click schemes can vary in price depending on the search engine too; one such as Yahoo or MSN will be able to offer lower prices on keywords than a behemoth such as Google, for example. Although it may appear more expensive than other forms of online marketing, PPC can boost your online sales exponentially due to your adverts appearing on a wide range of websites across the engine’s network.
