Search Engine Optimisation Overview

One of the best ways to increase the traffic to your website, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the method by which a website is modified to increase its rank in a search engine. This can be done in a variety of ways such as the use of particular search keywords included in the text content and the meta-tags of each page. SEO providers and specialists in this field make it their business to understand how all of the major search engines work. Google, Yahoo and all the rest have specific rules and requirements that determine the relevance to a search and hence your website’s rank in the results. Knowing these rules is the key to success.

Search engine optimisation can be seen as a form of online marketing for your business, helping you to increase traffic to your site and therefore boost your sales revenue. It is a special form of PR that can raise your company’s public profile as more and more people become aware of your products or services and find your website through their own searches.

There are many other ways to advertise your company online, but none are as cost-effective as SEO. With pay-per-click advertising and search engine marketing, for example, you pay for every time someone clicks on your ad or pay for a “featured” link at the top of the search results, and with other schemes you may have to pay a recurring fee for advertising space. With SEO however, after the initial outlay you will have no other fees to pay and will benefit from a permanent increase in traffic at no extra cost. You can also think of it as a free form of search engine marketing where you don’t need to pay the search engine.

Although raising your rank in all search engines definitely works to your advantage, Google is by far the most successful, and this makes it one of the best to focus your online marketing strategy on. Accounting for nearly 70% of the search engine market share in the US and a whopping 87% in the UK, if you can get ranked on Google you are sure to boost your traffic significantly. Other search engines such as Yahoo and MSN, while important, simply don’t have the same impact on traffic.

In summary, search engine optimisation is one of the many ways available to boost the number of visitors to your website. By making your content more relevant to the people who view it, they are more likely to hang around after that initial click too and consider purchasing your product or service from you. This will result in a higher turnover, and hence more profits for your company in the long-term.
