Search Engine Optimisation(SEO) is an ever evolving process of making websites more appealing for consumers in the eyes of the Search Engines. The online environment is still in its early stages of development, 2006 saw Web 2.0(pronounced web two point zero) emerge as a breath of fresh air in site design and user interaction. It summarises a collection of different website aspects and elements collating into a common best practice standard.
Examples of Web 2.0 are sites such as Flickr, Wikipedia and the blogosphere in general, where content is added and maintained by site visitors. I encourage best practice techniques such as Web 2.0 with the projects I work on because they have a proven track record of success.
Search Engines are a large index of information resources and need to provide current, relevant results. For this reason Search Engines adapt their website inclusion and ranking criteria on a regular basis. Quick wins can be achieved, but they generally do not provide stable long term results. Current knowledge and techniques should be applied to ensure websites are not left behind; although there are basic foundations and practices that should be followed for long term Search Engine Optimisation success. Understanding and applying current techniques ensures that when Search Engines change their ranking criteria a website is not left behind.
The amount of time to be invested in Search Engine Optimisation activities is defined by the competition that a website is surrounded by, in competitive markets there will be more work involved with reaching the desired Search Engine Optimisation results. A primary competitor may have had a large amount of Search Engine Optimisation work completed, this certainly does not mean that other websites cannot outrank them, but the process will take longer or a different approach should be employed.
