Articles > Online Marketing: Engage Users without Flash

Online marketing is about much more than simply drawing users to your site. Although the best website in the world is worthless is nobody knows about it, the converse is also true: increasing the traffic to your website will not do you any good if there is nothing there to engage your visitors.

If you truly want your website to become a success, you will have to think of as many ways as you can to increase its value to the end user. This can include well written content, an innovative approach, intuitive navigation, interactivity and personalisation, among other things. Your website should encourage the user to explore at their own leisure in a comfortable way, should make it easy to find the information they are looking for and keep it relevant, and also make good use of design principles such as colour theory, composition and dynamics to carefully lead the viewer’s eye around the pages and make browsing your site an aesthetically pleasing experience.

You will also have to invest a significant amount of time and effort (or money) into your online marketing campaign. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is more than just a bit of keyword loading or link placement. Now coming under the larger heading of search engine marketing (SEM), your search engine optimisation efforts will most likely include registering with online directories, careful rewriting of content, and more, and will go alongside paid ad placement in search results and pay-per-click (PPC) advertising such as Google AdWords. All the main search engines provide some great search engine marketing packages and you should research them thoroughly. You will also need to consider email campaigns and other targeted and personalised forms of online marketing.

One very important thing to realise is that as with offline marketing, any images you need to use for your website, advertising or newsletters should be sourced from a professional photographer or stock art website and you should ensure that you have full rights to use them as you wish. Using poor quality product images or grainy pictures of people on your website is a guaranteed way to lose business, and infringing someone else’s copyright will soon make your company go bust. You should also ensure with images that they display your product to its full potential and that you have a good balance between text and images across all of your media.

Making sure you are keeping the target audience in mind when providing content and targeting information to the relevant groups of people, advertising in the right places to reach those people, and keeping them engaged when they reach your site is the key to becoming a success online.
